July 1962 Coldest and Darkest on Record

July of 1962 set several weather records. The average temperature for the month was 14.8°C which was 4.2° below the normal for that time period. Warren Burns of the Charlottetown Experimental Farm reported that was the darkest, coldest and one of the wettest on record. The sun was only visible for 130.2 hours with the average being 246.3 hours. Islanders and tourists alike were all shivering due to the cold and dark weather. The high temperature for the month was 26.7°C and the low was 5.6°C.

The month was also quite wet with 143 mm of rain falling at the Experimental Farm Station in Charlottetown but this was well below the record amount for this station of 173.5 mm recorded in 1912. There were 22 days in July, 1962 where at least a trace of rain was reported.
